Nice article, some times people can be partial. I think corrupt politicians are the ones who should suffer under the police and not gay people.

Reply from Audrey:

Okay, pretty nice you included a quote which reflect some experiences that am going through. See, some doctors believe that a male to female transgender woman who is attracted to cisgender women has a serious psychological problem. The paradigm here is that a successful male to female transition has to be accompanied by some blissful and romantic heterosexual liason. Something close to a happily ever after stories like Shrek, Sinbad of the seven seas, Snow White and the seven dwarfs plus cinderella. Now, my mum tells me I have to get married (to a man) to be a "real woman" and I should not walk in our neighbourhood at night. Some girlfriends of mine gave me an ultimatum; "stop watching transformers and stealth and whatever crap I watch and pick girly stuff like desperate housewives". Please. Aren't they conniving with the larger narrow minded society to make me a desperate housewife. Then of course I have to have a pink top. Perhaps the next one will be I should be wearing pads once in a while and pretend am having my periods plus complain of non-existing cramps and nausea.

For the love of God father to Jesus our lord and savior, why can't these people return the same favor I extend. I don't go around telling my neighbours "Oh please sleep with as many men as possible to prove you are a true woman" "Oh there are these pills that will make your penis longer and harder and you will be twice a man as those men with half the length of your penis" These people hate transsexual people.

Thanks so much for supporting the fight. I am currently working on an article on specific human rights as stipulated in international covenants and in our constitution that our loving neighbors abrogate in the course of our friendly interractions.

There are several other publications I have done with Pambazuka Newsletter: Unacceptable Human rights violations against transgender people, Anti transgender discrimination in the provision of medical services in kenya and the fallacies of identity politics.

I will get intouch with you once am done with the article. That's this weekend.

Thanks

The police are over arching government powers in the name of securty, and they are calling it citizen protection? Shame on them, some even make sexual advances to the trannies on the streets of Nairobi and Mombassa. Nice article at least now I know there is no law against cross-dressing in Kenya. it is horrible the way transgendered are treated in all aspects, really unfairly and they have done nothing wrong to deserve this. Health, security, employment, families and even social life. Audrey way too good article, couple of thumbs up.

I am delighted that Audrey is writing so transparently about transgender experiences in our sister country. I would love to use this material in a reader on African sexualities that is being developed by Prof. Sylvia Tamale. What would the procedure be to obtain permission to use it? I think that such writing should get wider audiences and the reader promises to be one way of getting more people reading about diverse African experiences with sexualities.
