Making shoes from old tyres and other recycled material is not a new idea but Ethiopian social entrepreneur, Bethlehem Tilahun, founder of Sole Rebels, has taken this further to produce 80 different designs in range of colours including turning old army uniforms into shoes. This year the company expects to double its profit from $500,000 to $1,000,000 exporting to 14 countries. The company indirectly employs 120 people and 75 work in the factory who are provided with medical cover, and other social benefits.
I covet these lace ups – zero carbon crafting, no animal products, recycled army uniforms and $65 is not a bad price to pay for hand made shoes but alas! They can be bought at retailers such as Amazon but it would be much better to buy from source. For this they need to sort out their online payment structure. UPDATE - Payments can now be made easily using either PAYPAL or Credit Cards online – secure and delivery to the UK or US is a maximum of 5 days.
