[...] Victor Mukasa of SMUG Uganda shares his experience as human rights defender and gives an overview of the criminalisation of LGBTI people across Africa. Finally he calls on everyone where ever they are to publicly denounce the anti-homosexuality bill which is before the Ugandan parliament. There are reports that President Museveni will intervene to stop the passing of the law. This cannot be relied on as for one thing he has yet to make public statement on the Bill. He has been vehemently homophobic in the past and there is no reason to imagine this has changed. Even the Archbishop of York has only managed a mild criticism of the bill though he claims to be working “behind the scenes” together with the Archbishop of Canterbury. Nonetheless his opposition seems to be based on the fact that laws are already in place and not an outright condemnation of the criminalisation of LGBTI people. This is pathetic and unacceptable from someone who is the second highest Anglican Bishop in the UK and a Ugandan by birth. [...]

[...] *In a repeat of the horrific 2006 outing of gays and lesbians, the Ugandan weekly tabloid, Red Pepper, outed 50 people in yesterday’s paper. Many of those named are Human Rights Defenders and members of SMUG (Sexual Minorities Uganda) including Frank Mugisha and Victor Mukasa who recently won a landmark case against Uganda’s Attonery General.
I'm reading this late, but it's excellent, excellent, excellent news!

It's important that human rights across the continent be applied equally across genders and sexualities. That's key.

Keguros last blog post..<a href="http://gukira.wordpress.com/2009/01/10/culture-of-impunity/" rel="nofollow">Culture of Impunity</a>

I wait for the day this will be a reality in Nigeria. No one is even talking about LGBTI rights in Nigeria. It's like a taboo. So many hollier-than-thou attitudes going on.

Congrats Uganda!

Guys, guys, please calm down and get a grip of yourselves. Let's put things in perspective, shall we?..

The Articles of the Uganda constitution that were upheld in this judgment have always been in existence. The rights that were affirmed by the Honourable Justice Arach have always been enshrined in wrtiien law and also, the UN Declaration of Human Rights is decades old. But although the Uganda authorities undoubtedly always had knowledge of the statutes and the international conventions, this has not deterred them in the past from acting with impunity and with abject contempt of the law.

I mean, isn't as if Justice Arach has promulgated a new law. So please guys, let us be excited, but let's not get too dizzy with excitement, yet. I would like to see compliance by the authorities with the terms of the judgment, particulary in relation to payment of financial damages. Only then will I truly rejoice.:)
