Bloody diamonds from Angola to Palestine

Alluvial diamond diggers Angola.jpg

New York and Londoner’s campaign to boycott the jewellery stores of Israeli billionaire and settlement magnate, Lev Leviev on Madison Ave and Bond Street. Leviev is a major constructor of Israeli settlements on Occupied Palestinian land in violation of international law. He owns Alluvial diamond mines in Angola where thousands work in dangerous conditions, largely unregulated and often digging with their bare hands standing in dirty muddy water. [Alluvial diamonds are cheap to mine because the diamonds are just below the surface. ]

Leviev’s real estate empire in Israel is building homes for Israelis in the West Bank settlements….All the settlements in which Leviev has built homes seize vital Palestinian water and agricultural resources and carve the West Bank into disconnected Bantustans, destroying hopes for a viable Palestinian state.

[DOC] Rinsing the Blood from Angola’s Diamonds
A public seminar by Rafael Marques at the Oxford University Africa Society 26 Jan 2007
…I am here to share with you a reality of blood, and contempt for human rights, in the diamond fields of Cuango {in Angola]…The private security companies, which effectively control the territory, on behalf of the diamond industry, have established practices of humiliation, whipping, torture, sexual abuse and, in some cases, assassinations…the main culprits are the diamond companies that, in fact, outline and supervise the security operations on the ground, as I have learnt. These security outfits are Alfa-5, K&P Mineira and Teleservice, and they provide services to, respectively, Sociedade de Desenvolvimento Mineiro [joint venture Endiama & Odebrecht], Luminas [joint venture Nofar Mining (part of Lev Leviev), Endiama & Twins Ltd], and Sociedade Mineira do Cuango [joint venture ITM Mining, Endiama & Lumanhe]. I have now, in my possession, up to 50 cases of abuses registered in Cuango in the last quarter of 2006…What the Kimberley Process…is doing is to rinse the blood from the gems, extracted in the Lundas, and certify them as clean. [also refers to Mineral Research Company of Angola (PEMA), Diamang, ASCORP (Angola Selling Corporation) (joint venture Endiama, Lev Leviev Group, Omega Diamonds), Sodiam/Lazare Kaplan International]
