Celebrating Diversity? Nigeria’s Speak Up Campaign

Today is Nigeria’s 47th anniversary but I am not celebrating – see below! Omodudu IS celebrating and as a member of the newly formed Nigerian Lighthouse he asked all Nigerian bloggers to write a letter to Nigeria as part of the “Speak Up Campaign”. There are five finalists including yours truly. I am not going to comment on any of the other letters except to say I want to be able to celebrate diversity and inclusiveness which is one thing Nigeria has so far failed to do.

Well done to Omodudu and Nigerian Lighthouse for coming up with the idea!

    I liked your letter.

It would be nice to go there and see my mother-in-law and brother-in-laws, but my husband won’t go until things get better. It’s so depressing to see so many resources wasted, and the ethnic, religious, and other divides fragmenting the people.

Congrats to Nigeria on her 47th birthday.
Nigeria is one great country with diverse cultures and ethnic groups.

    Happy birthday mother Nigeria.
Its really been a rough ride.
Nearly 85% of your children are scrambling to feed while a selected few live in stupendous affluence.
Those who conquered, plundered and christened you are still very much around after nearly a century. They still control your children through their multi national corporations with the help of some local stooges.
Your children are now scattered across all continents inspite of your enormous wealth. They are treated with disdain by the offsprings of your enemies. The vast majority of your children are crying for good leadership.Up until now,it has been an effort in futility. The Imperealists only gave your children political independence. They denied us economic independence. They carefully and effectively usurped the balance of power to favour the Northern Oligarchy to the detriment of your children.
Today various ethnic groups are agitating to go their separate ways. They are on the verge of abandoning your name because they are constantly being left out of the share of your huge resources.
Alas, there appears to be a light at the end of the tunnel.
On the 29th of may this year a new leader emerged out of the stock of the self-proclaimed custodians of power (The northern oligarchy) named Yardua.
Characteristically,he was enthrowned through a charade called election. He came on a false mandate.
Mother, the said election was rated as the worst in African history.
At the moment he appears to doing well atleast compared tp his predecessors.
But bearing in mind that he came on a false mandate and the opposition parties are still in court challenging his stolen mandate,it becomes impossible to conclude.
Our past leaders are experts at measuring the opinion polls and exploiting it to their adavantage.
Could this be the beginning of a new era or is this still the same old trick of settling down and then unleashing hell on your children?
Your children have no answers yet mother.

AND to my dear sister Sokari, I say,

    Thanks for the explanations.
