Kele Okereke, born in Liverpool and son of Nigerian parents, musician front man for UK indie band “Bloc Party” talks to Craig McLean of the Guardian Observer on his personal experiences of racism, religion, drugs and coming to terms with his own sexuality. He hasnt quite got there but he is clearly asking questions and considering the implications for him as a young black 25 year old of Nigerian parents living in the East End of London. If you know the East End of London then you know that race is a daily in your face experience and homophobia amongst the both the black and white community is not something you would want to choose to face!

A Weekend in the City is his unflinchingly honest depiction of a world of drugs, racism, religion, suicide, gay sex, violence, youth in hoodies and white vigilantes. This is London, it says, and this is now. The record doesn’t presume to have all the answers; it is as confused and confusing as life is for young people. It also sounds terrifically exciting, a crunching mix of guitars, electronic beeps and multilayered vocals; a great leap forward for British music.

A brave young soul with a consciousness that is admirable!
