2007 Bloggies

Nominations have opened for the 2007 Bloggie Awards. As Haitham of Sabbah’s blog writes these are not just another blog award.

Nonetheless it is annoying that yet again the Middle East and Africa are lumped together – What is the connection I ask myself especially since both regions have enough blogs to warrant separate awards – doing this is a kind of marginalisation of both regions.

Still they are important enough so I have nominated the following:

Best MedEast/Africa blog:
In addition to myself,
Sabbah’s blog;
Sokwanele

Best music blog:
Steve Ntwiga Mugiri

Best American blog
Women of Color

Best LGBT blog
Jay Walks

Best new blog
Kameelah Writes
AskThisBlackWoman

It’s even more annoying that Africa and the Middle East get lumped together because it’s always the Middle East that hogs the attention because of western politics.

Wow, thanks for the nomination Sokari.

Like I keep saying, I just love the music and all I want to do is keep a little bit of our heritage alive.

Brian@yes – an African blog is yet to win any award where the two are joined together.

Its not surprising for me that they have lumped Africa and the Middle East together. Like you said: “Still they are important enough” I wouldn’t have been surprised if Africa was totally excluded, either.

Its not today that such marginalization started. The western media, governments, businesses, all marginalize Africa. It’s not unusual to see “Middle East & Africa” or even Europe/Middle East/Africa”
The fact that the word “Africa” comes last in such categorizations, tells a lot.

    This is abominable.

For goodness’ sake, Africa is the 2nd largest and 2nd most populous continent, and is home to 54 independent countries. With more than 890,000,000 people (as of 2005) in 61 territories, Africa accounts for about 14% of the world’s human population.

    The marginalization MUST stop!

I have written by email to the organiser of the 2007 bloggies complaining about the lumping together of the two regions. I know its a chore but the more people who write and complain the more likely we can get them to give each region it’s own category. The email is :

Response to my email on the combining of Africa with the Mid East

“Argh. Yeah, Africa was supposed to be separate this year (with Middle
East combined with Asian instead), but I neglected to change the
category name. Sorry for not noticing the mistake in time. It’ll be
    fixed next year.”

Not really good enough but at least next year Africa will stand on it’s own.
