Rivers State Tief tief

Report from Sahara Reporters on the reign of Peter Odili (did I read somewhere on the blogosphere that this man was presidential material!) on how he “looted the state”….Well not exactly a revelation – everyone knows he is wayo but we were not privy to the full extent of his thievery or the details. The question is why is he not being picked up by the EFCC?

Peter Odili has since graduated from the president’s right hand man to his anointed successor, according to inside sources within Aso Rock (Other sources say OBJ has told so many candidates that they are all anointed by him). Though Peter Odili was known to have looted the treasury of Rivers State with the reported acquisition of a huge South Africa-based hospital, two Brazilian made Embraer jets bought with Rivers State resources but converted to his personal use for his Presidential campaigns and an open declaration by Mr. Nuhu Ribadu of the EFCC that he is a “crook”. ………….Apart from the proliferation of state sponsored militant groups, killer squads, unemployment, insecurity of life and property, lack of infrastructures Rivers State has nothing to show for these hefty allocations.

People keep ranting on about what a wonderful job this EFCC is doing but Odili and his brother next door Mr Goodluck Jonathon who donated N250million towards hosting a musical event that brought in Jayzee and Snoop Dog – not to speak of his wife’s money laundering business! What is wrong with the people of Bayelsa State that they cannot bring this man to account for why he is giving away money when they themselves have no utilities and infrastructure. What is the difference between him and Alamieyeseigha?

And as for the event – at what cost?

Though exorbitant gate fees were charged by the organizers, what was realized from the gate fees proceeds could not have paid hotel and travel expenses for the American visitors who Sahara reporters learnt also charged huge appearance fees. There were chartered flights that brought personnel and equipments for the event. At one point, the organizers chartered the largest cargo plane on the planet, Russian made Antropov, to ferry sound equipments from the US to Nigeria.

I recently found this photo on Salem Africa – titled “Africa Unity Founders” – well what a legacy they left for us all.

People had dreams once – my pops had dreams. Now his dreams have died and all he thinks about is secession of the Niger Delta from Nigeria. A huge turn around for a young lawyer who stood up against the Biafran session, believing in a “One Nigeria”. Now he wishes and spends all his time writing about why the Niger Delta should secede from the rest of the country. Why he and more people from the Rivers should have supported the idea of a Biafran nation. And no he is not Igbo nor is he particularly radical or believes in violence – he just wants justice and what he believes are the rights of his fellow people in the Niger Delta. To get rid of these obscene individual clowns who run for election for the sole purpose of enriching themselves. What is wrong with Nigerians that they just sit back and take this time and time again. I think the fundamental problem is that Nigerians are conservatives – we clearly do not have revolutionary radical tendencies that would bring about transformation.

With that belief it is impossible for any real change to take place. The Niger Delta has an opportunity to make that leap but it is doubtful it will take place with no ideological transformative leadership in place since Ken Saro Wiwa was murdered by the state. On the contrary a mismash of self serving militants with no clear direction or leadership can never achieve anything other than cause more chaos and misery.
