i wanna love you militantly/make revolutionary love.’–sharon smith-knight from ‘revolutionary love’
a beautiful poem i came across called ‘political man’ by turiya autry and walidah imarisha
hey baby i picketed in front of the jail today. (hmmm, keep it going don’t stop) i set fire to a nike store. (ooh, you know how covert actions turn me on) i exposed government corruption at the highest level. (oh god, that’s what i’m talking about) girl, i dismantled this whole racist oppressive totalitarian capitalist regime. (oh yeah) and replaced it with a nuturing respectful egalitarian and open society! (oh yes, oh yes, right there RIGHT THERE it’s sooooooo gooooood!)
this reminded me of many things. certainly it reminded me that for many of us who commit themselves to social justice efforts, we give so much of ourselves that we may burn out–reduced to a shell of a rudderless, detached and myopically focused self. we have limited time for loving relationships and even more importantly we do not take time to care for/love ourselves. to be an activist and to be a lover ([of self+other] in whatever way you choose to interpret this) are not mutually exclusive states of being+acting. it does not require a sacrifice of one in order to successfully embrace the other.
