In our culture…..

April 27th, 2006 Sokari

12 of 18 of Kenya’s women MPs walked out of parliament during the debate of the Sexual Offences Bill which was presented yesterday. The women were responding to a statement by Paddy Ahenda who said

“If the bill is adopted the way it is, it will prevent men from courting women and this will be a serious impediment to the young who would want to marry,” said Mr Ahenda.

“In our culture, when women say ‘No’, they mean ‘Yes’ unless it’s a prostitute.”

No wonder rape has reached epidemic proportions if this is the way men think! And what was wrong with the remaining 6 women MPs and the other men – does this mean they agree with Mr Ahenda? This is so outrageous. The same song is sung everyday ” in our culture…we dont do this we dont do that but what we do do is condone abuse and take away people’s human rights”. To hell with this so called culture we have, we need to get rid of it because it is killing us and destroying our lives.

It is very tragic that our culture not only undervalues women and their safety, but that our leaders resist attempts to make laws that protect women and enforce justice. Rape is not taken seriously yet it affects women in all sectors of society, with a wide range of age, despite their personal appearance or character. Instead of people looking at the issue, they usually make a personal attack on the victims. I wonder if any of the men are thinking of their wives and daughters. This aspect of the culture has to be rejected.
