Being a Proud Homophobic in Independent Africa

in Africa

Uganda recently celebrated 43 years of independence on the 9th of October.  I think it is worthwhile reflecting on how little progress has been made in the area of human rights.  Pastor Joshua Mugabi joins the African brigade of "moralisers and righteous" and is proud to write in the Sunday Monitor,

"Uganda was the only nation whose President spoke out for abstinence at a condom crazy global conference…And he was among the few bold world leaders who dared to accurately declare that homosexuality is a cancer and not a human right".

In 1999 the African Civil Rights Movement issued a  Resolution  that points out the inconsistencies of the so called "independence" of African countries

WHEREAS, all people of good will throughout the world agree with those sacred words in the American Declaration of Independence that all men are born equal and have unalienable rights, among them the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. In practice at the present day, Africa is excluded; hence it is today treated as a colonial continent for the West to plunder, loot, and decimate……………….

This includes lesbians, gays, bisexual and transgendered people.  Rights are either inclusive or they are worthless.  No country or people can ever achieve  independence and freedom whilst excluding sections of the population simply because  because they are different.

Thinking of the realities of African independence (Nigeria was 45 on the 1st October) it might be useful to turn to the Patrice Lumumba´s vision of Pan-African Unity which so threatened  US imperialism they had to assassinate him.  Unfortunately since then African leaders with the exception of Thomas Sankara have been complicit in the imperialistic intentions of America and its Western allies.
